Laser – physiotherapy with a medical laser

A medical laser is used successfully in physical and rehabilitation medicine to reduce pain and help tissue recover. The focused monochromatic laser beam improves wound healing and circulation, and so speeds up recovery after injuries to muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. Laser therapy has a significant effect on cellular processes, immune function and collagen formation. The optimal clinical parameters depend on the injury itself and the specific features of the area being treated. The laser used in physiatry is a photobiomodulation laser.

Laser beams are monochromatic (a controlled wavelength), coherent (the same phase in space and time) and collimated (parallel, without divergence under therapeutic conditions). In the tissue, laser light is absorbed by biomolecules, which leads to cell proliferation, collagen production and ultrastructural changes.

The antinociceptive (pain-relieving) effect of laser therapy is used in acute and chronic pain syndromes to reduce medication doses and side effects. We use contact methods for better penetration and less attenuation, while non-contact application is reserved for wounds and tissues that need to be spared direct contact.
