Peripheral nervous system – nerve roots
There are a number of syndromes characterised by damage to the nerve roots and peripheral nerves, which we call polyradiculopathy and polyneuropathy. They differ in their time of onset, location, aetiology and pathology. They present with paresis or paralysis, weakness, absent reflexes, muscle hypotrophy and atrophy, and sensory deficits or sensory phenomena, with or without pain. Symmetry or asymmetry is an important pointer to the possible diagnosis, as are the pattern, the level, involvement of the upper and/or lower limbs, progression and involvement of the autonomic nervous system. On the basis of the clinical examination, medical history and diagnostic work-up, the specialist doctor will propose and arrange treatment and rehabilitation.
