Guillain–Barré syndrome
Also known as acute ascending polyradiculitis or Landry–Guillain–Barré syndrome.
This syndrome can have many causes and triggers, from viral or bacterial infections to unknown ones, with the body's immune response playing the dominant role. It is characterised by relatively sudden muscle weakness that spreads from the periphery towards the centre in an ascending pattern. Muscle weakness predominates over the sensory component. The muscles affected first are the last to recover.
Treatment and rehabilitation require the cooperation of several medical specialties, both during hospitalisation and during outpatient physiatric rehabilitation.
