Capillaroscopy in systemic sclerosis (SSc)
SSc is the prototype disease with a pattern recognisable on capillaroscopy.
Relevant diagnoses:
SSc and the SSc spectrum; capillaroscopy is part of the ACR/EULAR criteria and VEDOSS (very early SSc).
What is seen (findings in brief)
The scleroderma pattern by phase:
- Early: megacapillaries, isolated haemorrhages
- Active: avascular areas, more haemorrhages
- Late: marked capillary loss, neoangiogenesis, chaotic architecture
How often to have a check-up
- Early/active: 3–6 months
- Stable/late: 6–12 months
Summary
A powerful diagnostic and prognostic tool in SSc, especially for early detection and monitoring.
