Why is an ECG important?

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the basic tests in cardiology and the quickest way to assess the electrical activity of the heart. It is performed by placing ten electrodes on the arms, legs and chest. Although it is simple and completely painless, an ECG provides extremely valuable information about the heart rhythm, the conduction system and possible signs of damage to the heart muscle. It can detect heart rhythm disorders that are sometimes transient and unnoticeable but can still have serious consequences. It can also show a past or acute heart attack, as well as changes that point to increased strain on the heart, conduction disorders or possible electrolyte disturbances.

This test is often the first step in a cardiac assessment. Because it is performed at rest and takes only a few minutes, an ECG is a very practical and accessible method for detecting heart disease in good time.

The ECG result gives the doctor a basic insight into the electrical activity of the heart and helps in deciding whether the patient needs further diagnostic tests.
