Psychiatry

Mental health, physical health and rheumatology

Mental health is directly linked to physical health. A stressful life and sedentary habits, which are increasingly common nowadays, lead to poorer physical and mental health. Adequate physical activity is linked to a positive effect on mood.

Physical activity through physiotherapy can lower stress levels. Exercise has been shown to lower cortisol, the stress hormone, to release serotonin, the ‘happiness hormone’, and to promote relaxation. Physiotherapy is helpful for people with symptoms of anxiety and depression: physiotherapy aimed at the physical symptoms of depression can raise energy levels, reduce pain and improve sleep patterns, which improves not only mood but also quality of life. Rheumatic diseases, which include various forms of arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, are often chronic and can significantly affect patients' quality of life. One of the key aspects of their impact is their link with mental health. Psychological stress, anxiety and depression are common among patients with rheumatic diseases, which can further worsen physical symptoms, make treatment more difficult and, as a result, reduce quality of life.

Diagnostic methods

  • Initial psychiatric assessment
The most important diagnostic method in psychiatry is a detailed clinical interview. The initial psychiatric assessment usually takes longer than follow-up appointments and is extremely important. As well as gathering information to identify any existing mental health difficulties and make a diagnosis, the first appointment is also essential for building a good therapeutic relationship. Without a good relationship based on understanding and trust, it is not possible to achieve real progress in mental health. Psychiatric follow-up appointment – it usually marks the start or the continuation of treatment.
  • Treatment methods
Every patient is approached individually. After the first appointment, the psychiatrist suggests possible treatment methods. Together with the psychiatrist, the patient chooses the type of treatment that suits them best.
  • Sexual health counselling
After the initial psychiatric assessment and diagnosis, the goals of treatment are agreed with the patient. Specific methods are started at the next appointment, depending on the sexual health difficulties involved.
  • Supportive psychotherapy
Offering support, understanding and help to people facing difficulties in life. Developing strategies for coping with stress in a healthier way and recognising the symptoms of anxiety and depression, with the aim of strengthening defence mechanisms.
