Hip disorders
Diseases and conditions affecting the hip, pelvis and thigh require a careful medical examination to identify the painful structure and find the cause. The pain may come from the pelvis and hip themselves, but it can also be the result of spinal diseases or systemic diseases. Pelvic injuries and fractures of the pelvis, hip and thigh, such as fractures of the acetabulum and femur, are common in young people because of road accidents or sport, while in older people they occur as a result of falls. Hip diseases can begin in childhood, and their consequences can later become a significant problem.
Hip diseases such as Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, hip synovitis and septic arthritis, in children and adults alike, often require surgery and long rehabilitation. Hip diseases that usually arise in adulthood are hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis), osteonecrosis of the femoral head, coxa saltans (snapping hip), meralgia paraesthetica, psoas bursitis, trochanteric bursitis and heterotopic ossification. Adults often have problems even after hip replacement surgery: chronic infections, loosening of the prosthesis and hip dislocation can occur. Traumatic conditions of the hip, pelvis and thigh, such as fractures, require long rehabilitation.
