Dry needling
Dry needling – inserting a needle without any medicine – is a technique similar to acupuncture; other names for it include intramuscular stimulation and myofascial trigger point stimulation. We use needling with special needles for myofascial pain syndromes. The needles are inserted into trigger points or into targeted connective tissue – muscle, tendon or ligament tissue, or a bursa or fascia. They can also be applied along or around neural points, that is, peripheral nerve structures. The relief achieved varies with the underlying condition, but the technique is used more often in people who have an allergy or intolerance to medicines, or a fear of them. In such cases, we turn to this technique. Its similarities to and differences from acupuncture influence the choice of technique. A medical indication is essential for the best possible effect. Talk to your physiatrist or rheumatologist, who will give you the best advice.
