Dr Porin Makarić, PhD

He was born in Zagreb, where he graduated from the School of Medicine and qualified as a medical doctor. After completing his internship, he completed specialty training in psychiatry at the University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče, where he works in the Department of Affective Disorders. He earned his PhD in the TRIBE programme at the University of Split School of Medicine. He has completed training in sex therapy, is a sexual health counsellor and is a member of the board of the Society for Sex Therapy. He has trained abroad, in England (Bristol and London) and in France (Strasbourg). He has completed training in ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and is training in CBT. He is the author of a number of papers in psychiatry published in internationally recognised medical journals and a co-author of several chapters in books and handbooks. He has been an active speaker at European and world psychiatry congresses and has helped organise psychiatry congresses in Croatia. He is a permanent court expert witness in psychiatry.

Areas of interest
Although he covers all psychiatric disorders, his main areas of interest and clinical work are mood disorders such as depression, and anxiety disorders such as generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and OCD. In his daily work he supports people who have been exposed to various traumatic experiences. He has experience in treating insomnia and, as a sexual health counsellor, treats the full range of psychologically based difficulties, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and low sexual desire in men, and dyspareunia, vaginismus, low sexual desire and orgasm difficulties in women, among others.
