Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, one of the endogenous (natural) substances found in tissues, especially in the synovium and cartilage. Hyaluronan is a component of the extracellular matrix, which means it is found between cells. The hyaluronic acid molecule provides high viscoelasticity and helps absorb load during movement. Its lubricating function, which comes from its properties, also allows better hydration and homeostasis of the cartilage. Hyaluronic acid has many physiological functions, and this is precisely why it is used in medicine.<\/p><p>In physiatry it is most often used for osteoarthritis. The many hyaluronic acid preparations differ in their source and in the molecular weight of the preparation itself, and the frequency of injections depends on this. The response to treatment lasts somewhat longer than with corticosteroid injections, although individual variation is still large.
